'The heart has its reasons that Reason doesn't know', wrote Blaise Pascal. The poet John keats yearned for a life 'of passion rather than thought'. Humankind has always been in awe of the power of emotion.
The question of emotions is one of the most important that anyone can explore. We are guided and controlled by our emotions. They shape our lives as we attempt to maximize some, such as happiness, and obliterate others, such as fear. Sometimes they seem to take over our whole body and our whole sense of being - we speak of being 'out of our minds'. What is happening in our heads at such times?
Collectively, human brains are transforming our lives beyond all recognition; we have it in our power to create a world that celebrates our individuality and the diversity of human nature, or to condemn ourselves to a living hell of uniformity and greater standardization both of nature and nurture. Even if free will is a neronal sleight of hand - the choice really is our own.
